I came off this morning, bruised but okay, but keep replaying it in my head to see if I could have done anything differently.

It's an 8% slope down, then a short piece of flat road, then another 8% down. Had been raining overnight and possibly drizzle in the morning but the road didn't seem wet wet, i.e. there weren't any puddles although maybe they wouldn't form on a slope anyway.

Coming into the flat bit I was at 30mph, but had taken it down to about 21mph for the second slope and remained at that until I hit the ground. The slope curves left near the bottom so I was riding the brakes to avoid gravity accelerating me, but the rear wheel locked up, swung side to side at least twice possibly three times, then either the front wheel also skidded out underneath me or when the rear swung out to the left it put the front wheel at too extreme an angle and it stopped dead throwing me over the side.

I've ridden this road four times in the past, all at identical speeds and presumably the same braking approach and never had any problems, and at least one was in the wet.

The only things that have changed are new brakes and new tyres, Vittoria Zaffiro Pro. I’ve briefly locked up the rear wheel when stopping for lights before, I put this down to the new brakes being more powerful than my old ones (although both are cable discs) but I’m wondering if the Zaffiro’s just aren’t gripping as well as the Michelin Pro4 Endurance I had previously. I don’t remember ever locking up a wheel on a descent before, and this was like being on ice, so maybe I even hit a patch of greasy road.

What could I have done differently?

I came off last week on pretty new 25mm Zaffiro pro too, greasy road light rain, just going fairly slowly, lost back wheel…maybe a coincidence!
I’ve got Michelin pro 4 on another bike, they don’t inspire any confidence in the wet either

Rainfall is low of late which allows a lot of roads to get slick. Then when it does rain the slickness is released. Needs some so.I’d days of rain to wash the lubricants off the roads.

My car is due the MOT tomorrow, so on the way to get some supplies from the super market, I was just brake testing on a quiet back street - just apply the brakes hardish as I needed to get the surface rust off the discs as the car has hardly moved recently. The ABS quickly kicked in, despite the roads seemingly being dry. The ABS never kicks in unless I slam the brakes on in the snow. We've had some cold days, councils have gritted, cars have dropped their usual oil, petrol, diesel over the roads, and we've had a bit of humidity, but not much rain. There has been little wind too.

P.S. I have Zaffiro Pro, not on bike at moment I’ve got something more puncture proof, for now, but they are fine in the wet.

Same here Zaffiros on both my road bikes - pretty good for the money, and with a bit of tread, work well on farm tracks etc. I chose them as I'm riding more back roads and Michelin Pro 4 Race (condoms) were too thin.

Okay that makes me feel better about the tyres. The only way to slow down on a hill is to use the brakes so it feels a bit like the cycling equivalent of a hospital pass, hill + grease + corner, although luckily was right next to a train station so I got home fairly quickly. Never had anything similar happen in 20 years so every day's a school day, albeit the bruises were never this bad at school.

Bruises, is that it. You should try MTB. Now that's fun.

The roads are really slippy at the moment. Brake earlier.

Were you by any chance off the saddle when the rear locked up? I.e. weight ratio moved to the front. Were the tyres so new that they still had that little piece of flimsy rubber in the middle?
