Crazy idea? Put a tyre inside another tyre for extra puncture protection

I was talking to a friend a few days ago about punctures... He told me he hasn't had one for over 2 years. He rides his bike with slick tyres through some sh*t and rough roads, lanes, weather, etc. His secret? I tyre inside another tyre. Basically he cut the wires of the inside slick tyres, then he lined it up well inside the outter tyre and inserted the inner tube. The inner tyres work as an extra protection.

He told me recently he had a thorn in the tyre so long in length that if it wasn't for the inner tyre it would have reached the inner tube. Has anyone tried that before? Any thoughts?

Probably fine for utility cycling, not for the type pictured in your avatar though

I bought a discount set of 10 X Pansela Tourguard tyres with a kevlar belt fitted, about 12 years ago, they are on 3 bikes which gave me 4 left overs, I'm on the last pair now, so I'd guess I get in the region of 8,000 miles per tyre.
1 pair got slashed by a broken glass outside a pub, the rest have worn out
Whilst I'm sure I've had many punctures over the years, it has been in the order of a couple per year per bike, which probably equates to in the region of one per 2,000 miles per tyre

what made him go that route in the first place

Basically, cost.. Cheaper to use an "old" tyre than buy an expensive pair.

You'd probably achieve the same effect, with better performance, by getting a good quality puncture-resistant tyre like M+ or Gators.

As above.. too expensive. The idea is to achieve the same effect without extra cost..

or just put some of those liners in.

Would you recommend any?

...and does he wear a pair of knicks inside another pair, for extra bum protection?

Probably yes! It is freezing out there :cold:

Just for the sake of playing devil's advocate, you could say that the extra weight would outweigh the advantages of slicks, but then the £ argument (recycle old tyres and keep the existing slicks) can be used to trump all comments. It wouldn't be something I would do unless I was really desperate, i.e. fair dos for your mate but unless you're totally potless there may be better options. But for sheer make-do-and-mend factor, why not? I'm all for not wasting money or throwing away stuff that could be handy. You only have to look at the pile of various part-worns in my shed to know that I'm not a tyre snob, but I do have some decent ones on the bikes I use the most.

Reminds me of years ago reading about landrovers in Africa. Massive thorns caused regular punctures, but the locals had a system. Tyre in a tyre. The thorns could go through the 1st tyre, but before it went through the second, slippage would snap it.

I can vouch for the Slime brand tyre liners - they are a lot tougher than tyre rubber and reasonably priced. They can be a bit annoying to position correctly, but the ones I fitted a few years ago seem to have bonded to the inside of the tyre, which is a bonus.
