Crazy system!

My grandson (25) has just found a job as a cashier in a petrol station after 2 years being unemployed. He lives with his girlfriend and two little children. He only does 19 hours a week but it is a job.
My point is: he is now £26 a week WORSE OFF working than he was before!! What sort of system penalises you for working? Of course he will keep the job as it is good for his dignity but he really is p**** off about losing out.

A system run by Cameron, Osborne and IDS? Don't trust their rhetoric about no one being worse off under the reformed systems and the minimum wage being a living wage (pretty sure they're still 60p/hr short) - look for independent analysis from economists and charities.

That's what socialism is all about. Make it easier/more attractive to live off the state than to earn a living and have self respect. So you become reliant on the state for your existence.

I have to say I believe the people who get the very worst deal are low-paid working people. They have to work hard, in less-than appealing jobs, for little reward, can never buy a house, and suffer from high rents and hence tend to have to live in the rougher parts of town are most likely to be preyed upon by various low-lifes. And all this whilst working their bollocks off to make ends meant, not freeloading and absolutley doing their bit contributing to society.

Did he spend his time unemployed doing any sort of training, voluntary work etc? Does he have qualifications or experience (what was he doing before unemployed?)
Anything that might make him more employable. He can still do this if working 19 hours a week.

I think you lose some benefits if you work more than 16 hours a week. Good luck to him and I hope his work leads to something better, more hours at least!

My lad, just gone 17, works in a bar and gym at a leisure centre outside his college hours. The entire operation appears to be run by under 18's with one adult supervisor, the kids get £3.87 ph! He earned £4 in the local newsagents............

Is he actually old enough to work in a bar? Or is it only 18 if serving alcohol and not just clearing tables etc ?
