TNT said they've already passed the average. One of the Aussies reckoned Cook's suggestion of 350 as a good score would take them well beyond par.

THe overall 1st innings average in Brisbane for all tests is 329, the day/night average is lower, but hard to find what it is exactly.

A number 11 isn't expected to "build an innings"

Archer does seem to have an ability to sometimes stick around for ages with a decent batsman at the other end though.

Indeed, what the hell was Archer doing hitting the ball at all. He's meant to be a fast bowling no. 11. Making contact between bat and ball is not in his job spec.

Archer is a very good number 11, in fact he is a decent number 9 with a good eye. One of the strengths of the team they picked is there are no outright tailenders in the Anderson, Bashir, Panear, Leech mode.

It’s great for Root to get his century at last and overall I’d say England are in a good position, but long way to go yet.
