Scenario: an umpire gives "not out" for an lbw because he thinks the ball was going to hit the stumps but that it pitched just outside leg. If it is reviewed by the fielding team and ball tracking shows it actually pitched inline but "umpire's call" on hitting the stumps, can the umpire give it out?

I would say it’s not out.
The on field umpire doesn’t give a reason to the TV umpire for their initial decision.

correct if on field is "not out" you need 3 green lights to be given out

if onfield is "out" then any or all of those can be umpires call and the decision still stands

I was at Edgbaston yesterday . . . a great day of cricket (specifically India batting) though not for England! Pope and Duckett out for ducks then the fall of Root and Crawley for not a lot this morning and I thought we'd properly screwed any slim chance we had but at 330 for 5 there may be a glimmer of hope although our bowling attack seems somewhat impotent at the moment . . . the call for Archer is getting louder I think.

Archer will defo play at Lords. They didn't play him here 1) to give him a bit of time with the squad and more practice and 2) cos its a flat wicket, they would rather bring him back on a more helpful deck for his confidence and to save over bowling him.

We have almost avoided the follow on with some great middle order batting. If we can get within 100 runs and still be batting tonight then I can’t see any result other than a draw.

Just seen the Stokes dismissal. His first ever golden duck in tests. As a first ball it was virtually unplayable! No shame in getting out to that.

Six ducks and two scores of 150 plus in a single innings. Never known a new ball make such a massive impact.

I came to this thread to makes exactly the same observation. The 6 ducks faced just 10 deliveries.
A grand total of 41 runs contributed by the other 9 “batsmen”.
Talk about sublime to ridiculous.

I feel this is a critical thirty minutes if India want to push on to a win.

The Indian innings was almost as lopsided:
587, with 7 scores under 32.

It has been lopsided, but.

India had 5 scores in single figures. They faced 88 balls and scored 22 runs.

England had 6 ducks and they faced just 15 balls.

That’s 13 additional overs of time and energy that were expended by England to get those wickets.

And in a test match which could end in a draw it’s important to take time away from the game.

Can someone explain to me how Crawley keeps his place? He’s completely unreliable, unless we are talking about failing when the chips are down.
An occasional 50 seems to be all it takes to secure his opening spot.

Can't remember the last time I saw an England team so comprehensively outplayed. India batted better, bowled better, and fielded better. By a margin.

Gill and his chums took the best English bowling could fling in their direction and swatted it imperiously to the boundary. Again, and again, and again. I jotted

Shubman Gill
Scores at will

With the caveat that I saw the whole thing only in the form of 'Today at the Test' highlights, that was one of the inningses of my lifetime. Or rather, two. And he didn't just score big; he scored so beautifully.

And it wasn't just elegant, effortless, economical, the truly amazing thing was that it was pretty much chanceless, start to finish, both innings.

Played sah!

Compare Ben Stokes, chopping on on I think 7, missing his stumps by a couple of inches and the grace of God, with the score shy of 100 and Five Returned to The Pavilion. Every Indian ball, you feared for the batsman. And this without their #1 bowler...

The camera caught a look on Stokes' face, when Gill was past 250 and swatting 'em away like flies, and it was: what can I do? And the answer was: not a lot.

Given time India could've easily scored 1000 in their second innings. England were running on empty by that stage. Going through the motions. Like zombies. Just waiting for it to end.

Here's to you, Shubman Gill. I hadn't heard of you a fortnight ago. I have now.
