20 times up it seems overkill in anyone's book.

I'm assuming "20 times" was an exaggeration (or takes all the different races into account). The circuit is 13.3km, so 20 loops would be 266km and over 4000m height gain without even adding the usual 100km or so run in. Unless they're only doing a circuit?

They all tend to fizzle out somewhat though, don't they? Commentators: Woo, here comes the zingy super-sprint! Riders: Whatever.

Depends on the breakaway group. If there are enough to hoover up all the points and none of them have any interest or hope in the points jersey or intermediate points competition (or even bonus seconds), then nothing happens.

Although even when it does, it is never that dramatic. But I guess it can help to define who is in the breakaway goup, and helps the locations of these points in terms of people standing by the road cheering.

Is there a massive tailwind in the valley or something? Because there's 20km after the descent to the foot of the final climb - all slightly uphill. Going solo is absurd
