I'm thinking of getting one to use over winter as i'll be going back to my car to commute.I have no idea whats makes a good trainer so any recommendations on a decent ,not overly expensive one would be much appreciated.

when you say 'cross trainer' do you mean one of those 'multi-gym' things..? Why not just buy a turbo..?

I guess you are talking about this odd looking piece of machine, right? What would be the purpose of it? Just to clarify: Cross training (also known as conditioning) in the real sports world (that is outside a gym) for cycling is running, swimming, walking, resistance training etc.
No point in wasting your money in it mate.. Do yourself a favor and buy a turbo trainer or a pair of running shoes.

I've always liked the fluid one's where you change the resistance by changing gears. I've heard good things about this one:

Had a Magura trainer and found it boring but effective for getting the HR up and building the legs with the added resistance but sold it due to the boredom.

Brought a set of Tacx rollers recently and they are a challenge and not boring and they definitely improve your peddling style and balance. You have to be smooth.

Having used both I would go with the rollers but the road is best.

Agree. Turbos can be boring. Rollers take more concentration hence are more involving. I use sufferfest videos to help with the turbo sessions as they do tend to take some of the tedium out of it. Quite like the look of the e-motion rollers (but not at that price!!!)
