Well, this week, my new bike was FINALLY Built.

Now, the cost of the build was pretty high, it shocked me TBH, however, I figured, it must have been a top notch job if I was chrged £160 (approx $250)

Ermmmm, Actually,it wasn't .

First off I asked for 2 inner tubes, The bike having mavic ksyrium wheels would have needed either a medium or long valve, but NOT a short one.

Then I noticed the headset was lose:

Now, Im RUBBISH with bikes, but it took me 60 seconds to fix this second mistake (Thanks to help on here).

Then I noticed mistake number 3, no carbon paste on the seat post.

Ok so, at this point, all pretty niggly stuff

THEN, this

Now, any bike shop, that has ever built a road bike must KNOW how wrong this is ?

I asked him to set the bike up for aggression, what I got was a flipped stem WTF !

The owner of the shop in qustion told me that he has been in business 18 years ! , I am sure he MUST have sold a road bike in that time, did that road bike(s) go out in the same shoddy condition ?

Then we have the cost, he was provided with a brand new groupset, all that was needed was a seat post clamp and headset bung, so the majority of the cost was the build, now I might not have been happy with the cost BUT that said, if the build of of top quality, then fine, I REALLY wouldnt have minded, but as it stands I have had to do so much myself that its left a VERY bitter taste.

I WAS a loyal customer of Crown Point Cycles, however, because of this, I dont think i’ll ever step foot in there again !

I wouldn't be so quick to shoot down the manager, he probably doesn't look at bikes as they go out and it's down to the mechanic.

What is the background of the store? Do they sell road bikes?
I know I wouldn't take my road bike to a few shops around here because they specialise in MTB and hybrid bikes. And likewise I wouldn't take my mtb to some shops as they specialise in road bikes.

You want to try and get to know the mechanic if possible and speak to them about what you want. A top notch mechanic will keep you happy!

should have said, the owner does all the work, he doesn't employ anyone else

He does sell road bikes and touring bikes

I thought it was best to support local, but this has put me off, I asked if he would be ok building this and he said he would

I have the opposite situation with my lbs - they sell mainly road bikes and hybrids so aren't able to service the hub gear on my roadster (although at a pinch they will sub that work out if needed). Looking at the web site of Crown Point Cycles, it looks unlikely they would do much custom building usually.

Then surely they shouldn't have taken the work on. I've been fortunate to to find a good LBS who so far have been great, even sorting a few minor niggles for nothing as they know I have bought other stuff from them.

Bet your enjoying it now you've got it sorted though, did you manage to get any of the £160 back?

Now hold on Gaz, that really sounds like the NotW thing: It wasn't anything to do with Rebecca Brooks or Murdoch, it was their journalists, Nothing to do with them at all... it doesn't wash with me. The staff that walked past it all day, MUST have noticed or said something. Either that or they should be working in the stereo section of Halfords, not a bike shop.

A bit of grovelling or an apology at the absolute least would go a long way, with remedial action being provided of course.

Those levers, my word...even my 5 year old daughter said they look funny!

Would suggest she open herself a bike shop then, as this man has been open for 18 years !

Maybe his man clientèle are the BSO brigade , after all the issues, I was half expecting the forks to be on the wrong way round too LOL

Have you actually approached him to get some of your cash back yet, or has he just refused if/when you have?

To be fair to the mechanic - if you said to most people that you wanted it set up "for aggression" they wouldn't have a clue what you wanted. Maybe you could have been a nit more prescriptive there.

But a flipped stem is wrong and the levers are on the wrong part of the bar. And all the other cock-ups would make me ask for a (part) refund and I'd never set foot in that shop again.

Ah, that's who you used.

They aren't known as a specialist LBS - it's just a 'standard bike shop'.

The specialists in the area are Wills Wheels, Withington Cycles, Surosa, Rick Greens, Bike Doctor, EBC, Harry's, and a few others (a few Dan_bo knows his way).

No wonder they struggled.

Standard length valves are useless on most bikes now - medium to long only. Obvious mistake. Headset - well it can come loose but only if the races hadn't been settled properly - what's probably happened, it was worshop tight, you rode the bike and the bearings have settled into the frame, leaving it loose. They should have made sure they were bedded in.
