I've decided to get some mudguards to my commuting bike. It is a from early 80s. The tyres are 700/23c). There is enough clearance so I think they will fit fine. My only concern is aesthetically and how they'd look on a old racer. What do you think? Have you used them on an old bike?

yes i have used them on an older racer and they are fine. i would say that you can hardly notice them BUT they will rub at the slightest bit of dirt but saying that they are still fitted and that speaks for its self

If it's a commuter, i.e. a working bike, then my first concern would be practicality rather than aesthetics.

As noted above they are quite unobtrusive anyway.

If you are using the bike as a commuter the most important thing would be to try to keep spray off you. Also if you are prepared to use it for commuting you don't appear to attach some sort of historical value to it, so practicality is all that matters, don't worry what others think.
