It's a voluntary ban.

Given that Snowdon is hugely popular with walkers it makes perfect sense to ask MTBers to refrain from hammering it down the path in the day time in summer. If nothing else, the presence of walkers would ruin the run. It's been in place for quite a while.

I agree completely - but that's well short of a ban. Just seems odd that a cycling organisation that prides itself on campaigning for cyclist to use Bridleways would be party to a such a ban.

Logically speaking, it makes sense for the organisation to look for a compromise through a voluntary ban, because the walking types are far more likely to claim the moral high ground were a serious accident to occur as a result of a bike ploughing into a group of ramblers. Ramblers' lobby groups would feed off such an incident in order to extend a further ban via byelaw rather than agreement, and given that there is talk of an open access for bikes on footpaths in Wales, it makes sense not to create and foster further friction between the two groups.

Exactly.

Dogmatically insisting on your rights no matter what is counter productive in the long run.

There's no need for walkers or horse riders to take the moral high ground, as the Wildlife and Countyside Act (1968) Section 30 gives them both priority over cyclists, who incidentally only have rights of usage on bridleways through that act.

The vast majority of incidents between a bike and other user would most likely be because the bike didn't give way, which if continued would give the SNPA grounds to introduce a TRO on safety grounds alone

A man who drove his 4x4 up Snowdon said he did it because it was top of his "50 things to do before he dies" list.

Craig Williams, 39, from Gloucestershire, said it was not a publicity stunt and something he did on the spur of the moment.

He added he understood criticism that his actions had been irresponsible.

Mr Williams has been charged with driving on common land and will appear in court on 16 September.

"There's no plan of action as we speak, there wasn't to begin with," he told the BBC.

"Out of a list of 50 things to do before you die, this was one of them.

"If you think that was on top of the list, the other 49 are now not going to be done," he added.

He said he appreciated that people were saying he had been irresponsible.

Craig Williams: "It was impulsive, spur of the moment"

Now he said he hopes he would be allowed to drive his car down from the mountain where it was left 400 yards (365m) from the top on Saturday morning.

Good grief,i never knew that, the report of a car on Snowden just came back to me.

If you read the comments below it appears that the Mr Willams posts a reply.

His sentence is interesting - compared to that he might have received for killing a cyclist...

A long, long time ago, I met a mountain biker who informed me that there was no need to use the bridleway when descending Snowdon. Apparently one need only place the wheels of one's bicycle in the central rack part of the mountain railway, and from there one is guaranteed an extremely speedy and smooth descent. I haven't tried this myself, so can't comment on whether it is true.
