I'm moving up to Cumbria soon between Cockermouth and Whitehaven. No time at moment to suss out any on/off road rides in the area, any suggestions would be welcome.

If you head inland, it gets pretty hilly.

Whinlatter Forest is only 7.6 miles from Cockermouth, you lucky man!
A fantastic trail centre with Blue and Red routes and outstanding scenery https://www.forestryengland.uk/whinlatter

The world is your oyster up there on and off road - lucky you. Get an OS map out and just have a look or contact a local cycling club. The C2C starts in Whitehaven as well. There is cracking riding up round Ennerdale, Loweswater, Buttermere and Bassenthwaite

Edge of the Lake District with many wonderful climbs and great cycling on quiet roads. There are many quiet virtually unused roads in the Lakes but you do have to search them out. I've a friend who has a caravan up there. We go riding together for 3-4 days once a year, he knows routes and roads everyone else has forgotten.

Being on the western side it will be quieter.

Learn to love hills, not much option really.

Mrs A_T's from Seaton... the western lakes to the coast are relatively flat apart from up Whinlater and Honister... the area from Whitehaven + Workingon [the early parts of the C2C] out to Lamplugh and on to Keswick are lovely, with connections along the valley bottoms to all the northern lakes; Loweswater, Crummock, Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwent all criss-crossed with good country lanes. You'll love it.

We all got up Whinlater Pass easily enough on a selection of bikes on the C2C so plenty of challenges when you're ready.

With the proviso that I know the South Lakes better, what I've experienced of the area you're moving to seems to have something for most cyclists. You've got Whinlatter for the trail centre as already mentioned, you've got properly hilly roads if you want to challenge yourself but you're also on the edge of gentler rolling countryside with a good choice of country lanes and without the number of tourists.

I hope you'll enjoy.:okay:

Head north and east following the Lake District loop as a guide. I like the area across to Ullswater. if You want to visit the central part pack your boots. Use the train to create some nice one way rides.

Very jealous. I love Cumbria and it’s beautiful scenery for cycling in. Some lovely cycling up past Keswick, into the hills around Blencathra. South Lakes are great as well.

I'll have to look back through my Strava for this but the standout ones for me would be Corney Fell - on a clear day there's a fantastic view of the Isle of Man. The other would be the Duddon Valley which is a fantastic ride. I've been there three times, the downside is it involves either Hardknott or Wrynose. There's also a great ride up the eastern side of Coniston.

My cycle buddy does the planning and I ride with him. I'll post a couple of good routes we did over the weekend.

I don't see much of @Ajay on the forum these days but I think that he is still about? He organised a South Lakes forum ride in spring 2012 on a rather good route. Unfortunately, the link to it no longer works (R.I.P. BikeRouteToaster!). Perhaps me tagging him will get him to nip over here and make some helpful suggestions? :okay:
