I have to confess that most probably do on my commute but it seems that 6 or 7 cars and a bus moving to one side to get out of my way is ruined by the one kerbhead who moves the other way purely to be a t***. If you ever challenge them they look at you innocently and say "I thought you'd appreciate the gap next to the kerb" as you'd been happily doing 15mph down the centre line.

Very true! It's always the numpties who stick in the mind afterwards more as well.

Don't the barges complain that you're in the water?

Unfortunately, that has happened. Twice.

Fairly standard behaviour. They see a bike in the mirror and then move to block it either by moving to the kerb or moving to the centre line. It doesn't seem to register that by doing so they open the gap on the other side and it's just a a matter of anticipation. I usually just give a shake of my head once I'm passed to indicate that I think they are stupid.

I get this once in a while, its very rare but it happens, like fossyant I just pass on the other side, then if the driver has left a gap to the car in front I'll sometimes sit in the gap.

I witnessed exactly this when I was in Otley recently, there's a cycle lane marked by a broken white line and it was busy but some of the queuing motorists seemed to object to this and were deliberately positioning their vehicles in the cycle lane to prevent cycles from passing. There was plenty of room in the carriageway so there was really no need to block the cycle lane, it was very mean spirited.

So I've noticed a curious thing in the last couple of days and wondered whether it was my commute or usual:
I've slid passed cars in traffic jams/at lights and I've sped though the cycle gap on priority chicanes and the result has been a driver overtaking me later on then either slowing right down so I lose all momentum or cutting out any gaps either pavement side/cycle path or outside.

really strange as it takes up their time more than mine...

I enjoy playing with them.

We used to have a van driver did this onthe A32

SImply pass the time by pulling in to the kerb, then centre yourself and pull out to the white line. Just small movements but enough to register.

Video shows a driver driving very unsteadily - then send it to the Company epressing concern about their inability to drive in a straight line, and secondly the factthat they keepo wandering into the cycle lane

Then as they pull across courteously wave them across.

You also can get this in cars. Short section of straight road when I'm 2 or 3 vehicles back from a slow moving lorry & I have the acceleration to comfortably pass in the space seen clear but a loaded van often doesn't Drop a gear, accelerate pull out & immediately have to do an emergency brake as the guy in front blocks the overtake. This happens on single & dual carriageways.

He did - infact there was a third time where I was saved by a moored barge.
I might ride on the other side next time you ride with him!

As others have said, it happened to me quite a lot when I first started cycling around, again as road bikes are pretty nimble it wasn't an issue flicking to the other side and overtaking them. Now more often than not the majority of drivers pull over for me, with the heat most have had their windows open so I say thanks as I pass them. If they try and block me and the traffic jam is quite long then a little hand gesture lets them know what I think.

This happens alot with me drivers make an effort to dangeorusly overtake or pull out right infront of me nearly causing a sode on collision then when they overtake often they go slower than i wqs traveling, they just dont like the idea bikes are faster in built up areas , i overtook a ducati 999 on a decent a few months ago and angry isnt the word for the rider he nearley killed himself overtaking on a blind bend to get past me again. Some bus drivers i can agree couldnt care less and are idiots if i get that or get them parking in a cycle box i always make the effort to slow right down so it just delays their journey, after all if they do anything dangerous theres plenty of on board cameras to back up my case.

I get this but living more rurally it tends to be people see a bike and overtake as its "slow moving" they dont tend to look ahead of that so then realise a car further up is turning right or something and so end up braking. Theres only one marked cycle section on my ride (its 10m long up to one set of traffic lights and then ends...) so roads are quite narrow anyway. I just use it as a chance to have a breather and maybe roll my eyes if i fancy it. its never been malicious just people not thinking!
