Hi all,

I'm thinking of taking advantage of my employer's cycle to work scheme to buy a brompton (probably one of the S models).

I have a bit of a tradition of having very bright pink bikes and while I'm impressed that brompton have not one, but two shades of pink I would really like something a bit brigher.

Has anyone here had any experience of getting one custom coloured? I imagine that it'll invalidate the warranty and I'd need to take off all of the bits that won't be coloured for a frame painter (Bob Jackson, Mercian??)

If anyone has any experience of this that they could share I would be very grateful.

Cheers,

Ed

Not sure about pink, but i entered a draw yesterday to win this rather spangly gold number:

Wow! Very nice!

Still think a nice bright pink would look better though. I have to look into what type of paint to use. I think my frames are mainly enamelled but it might be better to powdercoat it. Any ideas?

Why don't you contact Brompton? I'm sure they would endulge your esoteric taste in colour. I'm sure this would be cheaper than paying to have a frame re-painted elsewhere and you would retain benefits of a warranty.

Thanks. That's next on the list but from speaking to a couple of LBSs that stock Bromptons the answer is almost always negative and I'd like to hear of others eperiences before I get in touch with the company directly.

After a bit of digging I am thinking about getting it powdercoated for a bit more durability.

Brompton will say no to doing a custom colour, but, if it's disassembled and rebuilt by an authorised dealership and powder-coated by a reputable outfit I can't imagine that your warranty would be significantly affected. Of course the new paint/ PC wouldn't be covered and if you got rust under it you'd be on your own.

Bromptons are powder coated for durability.

Cheers, that's what I thought. I will have a chat with my local dealer and see if that would wash; though even then I suspect that the warranty would be invalidated (and not just for the paint). Given Brompton's reputation for reliability I'm not too woried by that though

This lot:

seem to come recommended and their powdercoating looks to be very high quality. I know that Brompton's are powdercoated but I had thought that most frame painters used enamelling so I was comparing to them.

Now I just need to sort out what gearing to use.... xx(

Afraid not!

It started out a a club colours thing then I moved on and now I use it as a bit of a gimmick to raise money for charity. Only really need it on the bikes I use for racing/events but for some strange reason I like it on commuting bikes as well!

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Try getting in touch with Adam Hart-Davis, perhaps via his agent. He has a customised Brommie which has been seen on some of his shows.

Nice! I'll look into that. It seems that there's quite a lot of customisation that can be done to them.

I had read that as meaning that the outers were braided like MTB braided hoses but you're quite right, it actually refers to the cables and I would have thought that gold cables would be pretty useless!
