Well, yes of course they are thinner, so the chances of getting it wrong must be increased I suppose, but really if you use a good chain tool and take your time it should be OK. Finger ends can feel remarkably accurately when it comes to centering the rivet and easing any stiffness just a touch.
My bikes all stop at 9 speed, so I can't say I've actually done it with a 10. Of course, if you're not confident or would feel endlessly worried your chain is about to snap, you'll have to spend the money.
