The only reason an apple should be cut equatorially, and then only skin deep, is when it's a Bramley and about to be cored, stuffed with demerara sugar and sultanas, and baked for 40 minutes at Gas Mk4.

If you want apple rings the way to do it is to first core, then cut equatorial.

For topping my morning cereal helping I do equator to core depth then pole to pole. I get half wedgies with no core then and no need for a chopping board

Equator cut, then cut each 1/2 into 5 segments in line with the seed pockets.

The end result is much less waste.
