When I started cycling 5 years ago (at age 46) I decided to go with a CX bike as a "one size fits all" job.

I recently moved to my first "proper" road bike (Planet X RT-58) and I find the difference is amazing. One thing I've learned is that bike fit and frame geometry are VERY important, at least to me - the younger peeps out there are probably able to contort their bodies into weird shapes and sustain it for longer than I can.

Bear in mind that CX bikes tend to have greater clearance under the bottom bracket which in turn (all other things being equal) is more likely to put you into a more aggressive position. I'm standing by to have lots of people disagree with me, and I'm certainly not saying don't choose a CX bike. Just be aware of what the differences in geometry mean and above all try the bike, bearing in mind you may be spending long hours at a time on it.

I have both although my race bike is an old steel bike. RhythMick is right, the racer will feel different. Mine is sharper, more responsive and lighter (not least because it doesnt have mudguards, dynamo etc) but a lot less useful for commuting and to be honest I only use it when is dry and sunny (bit like a ducati then lol).

I guess the nearest comparison is a r6, compared to a vfr. (probably not a great one but one is great for fun intensive rides and the latter does everything quite well)
