Hi All, just ordered my new bike (Giant Crs 0) and should be getting it next week. I already have Helmet and gloves but was looking at other gear like Waterproof Hi viz jacket and trousers etc. Is there any brand you'd recommend? I know you get what you pay for and I'd rather get some high quality clothing that will last! Also, cycling shorts. . . Are they better to wear, do they improve perfomance? Thanks.

Padded ones are more comfortable if you're going more than a few miles. I don't think they have performance enhancing qualities built in though ;)

I use a Montane Fetherlite smock to keep the rain off. It packs down nice and small and will hold the rain off pretty well: you'll get wet eventually if you're out in the rain for a while, but it's good enough for the journeys I do. It's a nice bright yellow colour to help our myopic four wheeled friends out a little, and breathes quite well so you don't end up feeling boiled in the bag.

I've got some waterproof trousers from the same range, although they're black with shiney bits instead of yellow. They also seem to do the job.

Tbh, I'll often not bother to stop and don waterproofs depending on how hard it's raining .. it's often not as bad being out in it as it looks from indoors. Especially if it's warm.

I do wear padded cycling shorts for the commute, though that's more for comfort than anything else. I have a pair made by Altura, another pair made by Montane. Both seem fine. Not sure about any performance increase: though I would need the throw off the cliff technique to improve my performance so I don't really have anything to compare to there.

I commute about 10 miles each way. You don't say how far you'll be going, but my experience is that you get what you pay for.

1st purchase having never bought cycling shorts before - Altura standard shorts for about £20 from LBS.

2nd purchase having found the Alturas made a big difference - 2 pairs of Tescos own - absolutely rubbish - avoid!

3rd purchase Endura FS260 bucket shorts. Very comfortable, no waist band and a better pad.

4th purchase Endura FS260 pro bucket shorts. More comfortable - better pad.

Your best bet it to go to LBS and see what they have in stock.

The new pro-gel shorts are currently the wifes favourite, especially when we are out on the tandem. You don't get to stand up much on a tandem, and 40 miles or so can seem like a long way in uncomfortable shorts. Have to say that an hour or so in the rain doesn't really botherv us too much so not really into the waterproof thing.

You don't actually need to wear cycle clothing to cycle, but it can be more comfortable. The Endura is good, we use them for CycleChat team stuff. Not that there really is a CycleChat team as such, if you are a member of the forum you are a member of the team...

Another vote for Montane Featherlite. I have two, on on each trike, and spray them periodically with XT waterproofer, which needs a tumble dry to activate it. I find by the time rain has got through the fabric (over two hours of deluge) I'm wet from neck leakage and ready to pack in riding for the day.

it does make you go faster, rather like a fast bike, fast kit obliges you to pass anyone with inferior kit

all that's stopping me going to team kit is the obligation to go faster

team mitts and the CC ss is as far as I dare go at present, and a tiny Santini logo n the shorts

Many years ago I was told that "any (insert suitable word) can be uncomfortable". If you find cycling without specialist shorts comfortable that's fine (& cheaper).

With a 10 mile each way commute I'll vote for cycling kit! As for going faster, probably as it's less constricting!

Montane +1
