cycle commuting

Since i got the new bike and work is planning to build a new bike shelter/rack this month, they have started it.
i have been thinking of cycling to work instead of walking however is it worth it. due to the fact it is about 1.5 mile cycle ride or a 1 mile walk.

when i walk there it takes about 20 mins, if i cycle there by the time i take the bike down stairs (live in 1st floor flat) cycle to work and then lock the bike up and remove the lights it will be about 20 mins.

just wondering if it wil be worth it. does anyone else do such short commutes.

You don't just have to ride the 1.5 miles though. Many of us live much closer to work than the miles we actually commute.

You have an advantage of being able to extend your commute to suit yourself or take the quick route home(such as when someone locks themselves out of the house and needs you to get home fast to let them in as it is starting to rain:tongue:)

I have to take the bike down 67 steps to the street. Even so, while I'll walk to the High Street, I've started to dislike walking so much - it's so slow! - that my break even point is about half a mile. And usually I'll pick up a little shopping on the way back. First time the bike journey might take you 20 minutes but once you've got the hang of locking it quickly and unclipping the lights you'll halve that time.

my direct commute is 1.5 miles each way and i do it 4 times a day , so yes it is worth doing .

and sometimes i take a detour on way home to increase the miles

i forgot to mention that i would be cycling in my work gear trousers and shirt as we don't have a changing room or showers etc.

My commute to work is 4.5 miles but 99% of the time I never go the direct route, normally I do around 7 miles in the morning (unless its raining, then I go straight to work), and depending on what kind of day I've had, about 10 miles on the way home.
No showers at work, so baby wipes and a small towel works fine.
I ride in my cycling gear, then change into my work clothes once at work.

I started commuting when I lived in a first floor flat in Dublin 0.75miles from the office; it all started from there. My current commute isn't much longer (1.75miles direct); this morning I took the 18mile option. Touch wood, my previous medical problems dissappeared when I started cycling and the short commute was the perfect way IMO to edge into things.
