Does anyone have a cycle computer with mapping facility?

If you are a user I would like to hear what you have and your opinions of it.

I understand people do use only maps (as I do) but I could be tempted to mix and match.

Hi Steve,

Like a GPS?

Look at the Garmin Edge Range. I have an Edge 705 and I love it.

Look at the 200, 500, 705 and 800.

If you are worried about charging your GPS on out of way tours, consider a Garmin Etrex Legend or similar, they take 2 AA batteries and if you use Lithiums (cheap on Amazon) you can easily get 3 or 4 days out of a set. Also very rugged and combined with a map make a decent choice.

The etrex as they were are now out of date. You now have a much wider range of options - the old ones, the new ones or the dakota. The Dakota kicks the arse of my old etrex. Both very good units for touring though.

I use a Satmap, have the whole of the UK in 1:50000 OS plus various 1;25000 maps I put in it mainly when walking, I plan my cycle routes on Memory map, then upload the route into the Satmap and bingo one has a route map. but I alos like paper maps as I can see the big picture whereas a GPS only shows a small area around your current position

+1 for the Garmin Dakota. You can either buy OS mapping to install on the micro-SD card, or import files of free mapping from OpenStreetMap.

This is the garmin etrex vista HCx with openstreetmaps (free). It is 256 colours. **NOTE** now an old model.

If you want a pic of the dakota, could put that up.

another etrex user here. Love it. Battery life is excellent (days, not hours); screen is readable; unit is robust; batteries are cheap (I use rechargeables anyway).

Its getting a little long in the tooth now, but with a 4gb micro SD in the tail still runs this years' maps just as well as any new piece of kit. No reason to upgrade that I can see. Yet.

(Though the lure of the shiny does get me).
