I suggested also supporting the central map repository, though Wikipedia with its massive bandwidth requirements might just be more in need. I would also say that most map type apps now use OpenStreetMap, all for free.

Maybe they too should be supported 'mandatory'. That word, as you can tell, I found slightly puzzling.

I support Wikipedia and they tell me I am one of about 10% who do. Once again, if we use it we should support it - if we want it to be around in ten years.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and I really could not care less. If OSM volunteers don't like how OSM is used by others the solution is simple. Don't volunteer.

While we are talking support I put my money where my mouth is. Happy now or do you simply want to carry on with your tiresome pursuit of something which adds no value to the discussion in this thread? It's really rather sad to encounter such an attitude.

My opinion of this forum is that many contributors argue for the sake of arguing - which really makes one lose interest in it. It's a shame there isn't a more robust weeding out of such pointless thread deviations. Still, I suppose one can always ignore them. There is really no value in talking to a brick wall and expecting a sensible coherent reply.

Thank you. Sadly I have weeded out quite a number of these "contributors," for want of a better word. This is the only forum where I've needed to do that which given we all share a common quite harmless passion is very strange.

At one point I left the forum for more than a year. I realised this sort of behaviour was impacting my mental well-being. A forum I visit for simple pleasure and to gain a little knowledge was adversely impacting my real life, a sad situation but one which no doubt brings pleasure to a certain type of individual.

Thanks again.

I only replied due the the suggestion that paying should be "obligatory". ( I had used the word mandatory from memory).

Do some research. They get millions in investment though Strava, likely the biggest got a whopping 110 million US dollars.
Though it is good for the (US economy). Most likely outcome for the small but ultra popular ones is that, as per usual get swallowed to a rival for 10s or 100s of million dollars. I guess payments, in small ways, offset a little bit of that possibility.

I simply added, I thought, pertinent information and am very sorry I managed to upset you because of it.

The first question is "what do you want from a cycling computer?", computers aren't all the same and have different strengths and weaknesses, some really focus on mapping and guidance, whilst others are purely about ride data, and some fall somewhere in between, some are good at almost everything but those are usually quite expensive.

Personally I tend to favour ride data rather than mapping, so I use a (now discontinued) Garmin Edge 130, which can follow a pre-determined route but it doesn't have a map. I also use a Wahoo Bolt, again for the ride data, but it does have a map, and it can follow a pre-determined route, it cannot do routing "on the fly" however.
