Yes I did it Norm. IIRC I paid an additional £50 p.a. (£1k bike). Additionally my insurer do not stipulate any parrticular type of lock to use when away from the home.
Of course, as always with insurance, it will depend upon your insurer and the t&c.
Indeed, I did the same, with LV (more later) for not much money. I can't remember the exact figure but it was around £50 to cover 5 bikes (including the kids' BSOs). Only the most expensive bike (£850) has any provisos, which are that it needs to be locked to something immovable. No stipulation about the type of lock, though.
I went with CTC as my LVC home policy's bicycle upgrade had a few too many strings attached in the small print (that you only find out by talking to the rep).
My household insurance is with LV and, when I had a bike nicked last year. I'd only had the bike a week and it wasn't separately it so it shouldn't have been covered. I was impressed and bloody happy when they did agree to pay out for the bike, lights and lock which were stolen.
That was partly down to loyalty (been with them for about 20 years, no-one else matches their quote) and because we haven't claimed in about 15 years, but, still, for an insurance company to pay out for something which wasn't insured was pretty damned good, IMO.
Claims process was easy too, just sent them the crime reference and the invoice for the new stuff and they paid out in 3 days.
For now, and because I take posssession of the bike tomorrow so I need the cover in place and it was easier to extend the existing arrangement, I have extended my home and contents policy to cover; no types of lock stipulated. An extra £50 for £1300.
Excellent, I think that's the best option.
What if your bike is left against a shop window, no lock at all and it's stolen?
How easy are they to deal with getting a new bike? (full cost *new* replacement?) Excess?
See above, LV were very easy last summer.
So a pound shop special will suffice? Do they specifcy that you have to lock it to an immoveable object (that cannot be lifted over etc)?
See above. One of mine (which was less than £1300) needs to be locked to be covered, the others don't but they are always locked when left anyway.
