I had a BMW driving all by itself alongside me last week: it pulled alongside and them started to veer alarmingly quickly into the cycle lane, so I hit the brakes to fall behind it and stay well out of the way. It continued on towards the kerb, until suddenly a businessman sat upright with his phone clamped to his ear. He'd been leaning over into the passenger area, rooting about in the glovebox whilst talking to someone.

I had situations like this and a blast on the double barreled (horn) narf makes them parp it.

Apart from me, I like to think I am a very good driver, certainly well above average ability.

I'm sure you are Dom, and that you have the string backed gloves and flat cap to prove it.

Thing is, riding a bike, brain switched on within a few seconds, running at 10 times normal by the time you hit the main road - HR pumping 150 plus.....

Drivers, HR still at normal for a sofa spud, (maybe 100) brain asleep, responses not there.....

They think cyclists are a pain...we've calculated our nip and tuck well before they have even had time to think about moving the car........

We all look at a car, listen to the engine noise, then nip in, out accelerate etc...driver still snoozing !

the phenomenon in the op might be due to drivers looking in the nearside mirror to check they've passed the cyclist. hands follow eyes and so the car drifts left.
