I'm always very cautious in these situations, especially with buses blocking the view. You can judge it a bit by watching the traffic, if one driver hangs back a bit, that's normally an indication they're about to let someone in, who normally doesn't look in the cycle lane. Peds are even worse for just stepping into them. I doubt I ever go faster than 10-12mph when passing stationary traffic, and probably even slower at junctions.

That said it's still the drivers fault - but you can make your life easier.

In dense traffic, most people are more cautious, but when traffic is moving more freely and a car comes across your lane (wanting to turn right into a side road) things unfold v quickly due to the closing speeds of the vehicles involved. A case in point (this guy stopped just in time):

though on 2nd seeing,, have you got your lights on? just noticed some of the cars did? maybe its worth doing a 'motorcyclist' and leaving em on?

Yes, I had my lights on as it was early and a bit misty.

still, i suppose at least he did finally see you,, and hopefully might take a bit longer to work out how fast a bike is travelling next time..


unlike the bmw who OVERestimated my speed last night and nearly clipped my back wheel :smile: ( i was setting off from lights and he was turning right )...
