There sort of is at Wanstead, just the other end of the High St but it's a little open for my liking. Can't remember about Snaresbrook but if there is, it would be better as it's off the main road.

OMG. I think you're right. I was joking about the one space. I looked before right in that spot and didn't see it, it's so tiny.

WHY do we still do this? God knows how many 10s of millions that station represents in terms of money spent, fares shelled out, economic activity. I can't count the car parking spaces. And ONE cycle space?

I suppose it's a lamppost or nothing?

I checked in person and that's actually not it. There are actually four hoops just inside the car park, allowing for eight bikes to be parked, altogether taking up a single parking space (compared to fifty or a hundred odd car parking spaces together with the huge space needed for cars to drive around in the car park!).

Looking at the paintwork on the rails and fence either side of the entrance, it's clear those are used as unofficial cycle spaces too.

Well, they are really spoiling you now with parking for 8 bikes. I assume the council hasn't done the maths - 1 car parking space = 1 car or 8 bikes and then worked out that cycling to the station might be nice to promote.

Walthamstow Central has (had?) a covered shelter with card entry and had space for around 40 or so bicycles. Not sure if it is still there as the whole area is being redeveloped but it may be more secure and easier to park than Snaresbrook.

Before I get too excited, let's see, that's 40 spaces for what, about 19,000 passengers per day going on these entry/exit numbers averaged over a year (but it must be more than that on weekdays):
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/passenger-numbers-at-underground-stations.pdf

So that's roughly one bike parking space for every 470 passengers. How generous.

Going on the same numbers I make Snaresbrook about 1 space for every 420 passengers, so Walthamstow is actually doing worse by that standard!

Bear in mind Walthamstow also has the overground line to Liverpool Street above the tube station. And the bus station right next to it. Apparently - according to Wikipedia - Walthamstow bus station is the third busiest in London. I find this difficult to believe, but it is always pretty crowded.

So your bike parking spaces per passenger may be very generous considering the cycle shed will also be for overground and possibly bus commuters.
