We have a Toyota Avensis Tourer (hatchback) and when we go on holiday, we are in the front, luggage is in the rear passenger and dogs are in the back.

I didn't really want a roof rack because I don't think I could physically get my bike up there, and I can see myself forgetting the bikes are on the roof and driving into the garage

My question is, in the event of an emergency, if we had to get the dogs out in a hurry, is the roof rack the only option? I have read that the door is not accessible with the racks that go across the door, I was wondering about the ones that are fitted to the tow bar?

Some of the towbar mounted racks (my rack of choice for safety, stability, security, includes lights and numberplate, and least impact on fuel consumption) do "swing down" with the bikes on to enable opening a hatchback ... although some work better than others.

Have a look at Thule racks - not cheap but will last a long time - I've had mine about 15 years and covered '000s of miles.
