Having never cycled in London, and not actually been to the capital sicne they were installed... What is the surface like? Is it quite slick like regular road paint, or does it have some grip to it? Just idly wondering lol

Some has grip, like the anti skid paint they use on some junctions, and some seem to be a slick paint. Was ok in the dry, but not cycled on them in the wet. But must think it's ok as can't imagine tfl would lay down a dangerous surface, or would they?

It's fine. TFL say so and they have been tested!

More seriously, there are different surfaces (i.e anti-skid at junctions) along the CSs, and whilst they look more slippy, I don't believe they are.

I've done a skid test on a few sections in the wet.
The anti-slip is obviously very different in plot and texture and is indeed grippy. The other stuff looks shiny in the wet and thus is presumed to be slippery but it is in fact perfectly fine.

Came through Clapham Common today, heading North, just past that second tube entrance, heading towards Clapham North. About half-way there approached a turning on my left. Car going south was turning to go across me. I was doing about 20. I slowed down, car stopped, I made a decision to carry on. Did so. As I passed heard a big bang behind me.

Stopped and turned round. Cyclist had gone down. Few of us stopped, found his bits and pieces (his pump had gone flowing, lights etc). He was fine, bike was fine, he was embarrassed.

"Saw you slow down" he said (I think it was an Irish brogue). "I braked. And skid. Sorry" He looked down at the blue shiny paint and rubbed his shoe along it.

It was very damp this morning. No idea what happened as all behind me (I was a good ten metres and more in front) but reckon he just braked too quick, lost control and went. Reckon that's why he said sorry. Gut reaction apology for being embarrassed about taking up our time (not that it mattered to us).
