Hi, not sure if this is the best place to post but I am looking for some ideas on cycle crime prevention. I am managing a project to install a technical security solution as a means to prevent cycle thefts from bike racks across a private corporate estate.

I have crime stats and it looks like criminals generally use cutters to remove locks, surprisingly it was some of the most expensive locks that are easiest!

The client is keen to use CCTV as a solution but with 2000 cameras to monitor already, there are only so many pairs of eyes to monitor them! We could use motion detection or analytics, but then there are obviously many genuine movements around the bike racks anyway.

There is a major access control system and I had thoughts of linking individuals pass cards to an RFID tag on the bike. If the bike is removed without the pass card being swiped then perhaps we can send an alarm to the control centre?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, I am passionate about trying to eradicate this problem!

When my offspring was in his first year at university, this worked for him. Bikes kept in substantial *secure* enclosed compund accessed by keypad lock. To gain the number you had to be registered with site security so all users known to security. Plus inside the compund were sheffield stands concreted into ground and each bike locked to a sheffield stand, so effectively a dual locking system. Nothing can guarantee safety from theft, just make it as difficult as practically possible.

RFID tagged to the access card sounds ideal. Maybe even have logic that doesn't unlock the door if an RFID tag not registered to that card is detected?

Bike Lockers may be an option ?
There are sever companies that make such things, some look very stylish

Othewise if you need to go with thconventional sheffield stand option, then look at some of the bike parking solutions that have recently been installed at some stations.
A quarter circle of 'glass' so in effect one wall and a roof, with sheffield stands inside and then covered by at last two cameras. This means that entry is only possible from one direction, so less view for the cameras to cover. The rack is also lit.

Someone in the know would simply remove the rfid, but it's a possible solution.

Are there busy times for the area for genuine use? Are there busy times for the thefts taking place? Motion detection could trigger alerts to control on a scheduled basis - alerting of movement between certain times when movement detected. Depends on what is installed already.
