Having said I was speechless, I went ahead and posted on there. I couldn't help myself.
What surprises me most, I think, is the lack of remorse. Years ago I worked in a shoe shop to see myself through Uni. The delivery driver there had been in Stubbs' position.
He had been driving down the motorway in an artic lorry. It was noisy, and made lots of interesting banging noises over every bump, and every time he stopped. He had to do an emergency stop when someone else stopped in front of him (I forget why now) and the car behind him failed to stop in time. Because of the noise in the cab, and the noise the vehicle made anyway, he simply didn't hear.
When he pulled away, nearby vehicles immediately flagged him down. He stopped, pulled over and called the authorities. He even went to the chap's funeral.
Now, it wasn't his fault, it truly wasn't, and I can understand why people who drive big vehicles can inadvertently cause damage (even to life) without knowing. But this event obviously shook him up. It was still evident years later when he recounted the story.
Stubbs doesn't seem to have the remorse gene in him, and his 'father' (I do wonder whether that particular set of posts was a mean troll) seems to be similarly affected. The driver I knew was sorry, every day, for something that wasn't his fault.
I don't understand how Stubbs wouldn't feel the same emotion.
