Here is another new Government initiative, the Cycle to Work Guarantee, has you employer signed up yet? Just tell them that: "A healthier workforce means higher productivity. Cycling to work is a great way for people to get, and stay, fit and healthy."

there was a guardian article about it today, and the guy planning for london wants 40% of people to cycle to work, where as at present only 3% do.

My office has secured parking, great shower and changing facilites, so all we need is lessons and some mechanics, i have seen the building hire some cycling mechanis a few times but i've never used them.

I have to say that I was rather disappointed by the length of the list of employers who have signed up. The site is a useful source of info if you are trying to persuade your employer that being cycle friendly has business advantages (tax efficient).

I would sign my self up but it only applies to England...

I've passed the details onto HR. We have secure storage, good facilities and the cycle to work scheme plus two evan's stores close by. It would be nice if I could persuade them to buy a track pump for the current 10% that do cycle to work.

Why not have a whip round for the track pump?

I couldn't find it on guardian.co.uk, but that does sound both ambitious, and also as potentially undermining the patronage of public transport. The 40% will have to come from somewhere, and in London that's likely to mean people who now commute on tubes, buses and trains. With TfL facing a £1.7bn shortfall this year, losing a big group of paying customers to cycling cannot be an appealing prospect for them. Expect further fare rises to make up for the loss of customers ...

But that's coming from a bicycle convert - I've given up on the Northern Line in favour of the bike to escape the underground horror already.

That's not quite how I read the article. It says that the current rate is 3%, and Lord Adonis (what a silly name!) is aiming to "double or treble that figure".

As an aside, Adonis is not just the guy planning for London but is the government's transport secretary,

The figure of 40% is the figure for Copenhagen, and, from what I read, it was only the Guardian's headline writer who felt that number was achievable.

Unless there was other quotes in a different article, that is.

I forgot there is the Cycle Friendly Employer Award scheme in Scotland, but it is so low key it is almost invisible...

I work for a university and it seems that the people at the top can't be arsed implementing any sort of scheme, even though there is a call for it from the people who cycle to work.

This is a poor scheme. South Ayrshire Council got a certificate for this!!!

Being as I'm in the power industry, I'm glad to see that National Grid, as well as competitors like RWE Npower and EON have all signed up, as this might give me some leverage with my boss, or his bosses. The tools idea would be brill, as we're all fairly competent maintainers but having some of the more specialist tools available to use might be useful.
