Recommendation for what? Route, bike? If the latter, how much do you want to spend and on what sort of bike?

Link doesn't work, need a weblink not app link

Hi I am thinking about starting to cycle to work.

Here is a link to the journey. What would be your recommendation.

Check out this route on Strava: https://strava.app.link/976rNvQtWZ
One thing you might try Adam is to put those starting and finishing points into a (cycle) routing application and see what they come up with. https://cycle.travel/ or http://brouter.de/brouter-web/ might be helpful and also allow you to change some of the factors to suit your preferences, like prioritising off-road cyclepaths or not for example.

(The link worked OK for me btw)

If you're fit then any road bike will be fine. If you're unfit a road bike with adventure/gravel crankset. That means gearing like 48/31 chainset and 11-32/34 cassette. I would also ensure large tyre capacity upto 40mm- makes for a nice comfy ride, allows off road riding for the time you fancy it.

Gravel/All terrain bikes are the category you should be looking at. Mudguards mounts and rack mounts will make keeping dry and carrying kit much easier.

This is a good starter gravel type bike with all the attributes I mention above

Reasonable length without much elevation to me means that you could use anything you like, with the only real consideration being road surface. Road bike would be my choice but you already have a good recommendation for gravel if you go off road sometimes.

I'd avoid the A6 TBH, it's horrible. You might want to go up to the A57 via Reddish Road and Reddish, then a short section of A57, before turning right towards Ashton old Road.

Neither the A6 or A57 is particularly nice to ride in rush hour.

I find the route evolves as you ride - you get to know that cutting down gully , or back road - takes out a monster of an island etc

have you drove the route in your car during the hours you would be commuting both ways? If not you need to do that to see if the route has any dangerous areas that may be a high risk factor for a cyclist. Once you've done that a couple of times and you feel it's safe, then try it on the bike and see how it goes and how it feels. I don't live anywhere near the area, in fact I don't live in your country so I can't recommend anything concerning that route other than what I said, others who know the route might have some insights.
