You would have to justify the tandem as coming under the "most journeys are for work purposes" requirement?

Well if he perhaps occasionally dropped off Helen by car on route to work, would it be very different to continue to do this but by bike or alternatively - dropping off a child on route to school. I don't see how it varies from justifying 2 bikes for either end of a train journey etc.

Put this into context; a company car isn't disallowed for Capital Allowances because it has more than one seat. Therefore in my opinion it should be possible to acquire any bike since you can ride it to work with or without a stoker.

:cry:I didn't say it's not possible, just that you'd need to think about how to handle it when asked!

My employers will not ask me for so to do would require a larger can opener than they possess.... for reasons I'm not prepared to disclose in a public forum.

If you're using Cyclescheme just shop around until you find a shop that will let you pay the extra towards it. Nothing wrong with that.

I advise against people doing that just in case they leave during the period. Would get quite complicated at that stage.

For myself I don't want to shell out more than the £80 odd a month (no VAT relief for us worse luck) for what might turn out to be a speculative occasional use purchase.

You just have to use the bike for at least 50% of your commute to work (for us anyway), so as long as you showed you were using it to get to work at times I doubt the question would even arise, no matter what size can openers your company owns.

If you generally cycle in (no matter which bike you use) I doubt you'd even hit a radar.

I thought that of the total use of the bike 50% has to be commutting.

Big government has thus far failed to nail me on this one
