Isn't that a bit unbalanced seems to be a lot of front overhang that way.

It is but less chance of damage to your bike.

The mechanic I use simply hooks the bike on under the seat.

Yes they are a different stand they do top bar mount and saddle mount ones certainly are good for working or cleaning bikes.
Like most things once you have had one you wonder how you managed without.

Cheeky bugger. It makes cleaning the bike a lot easier if it is in the air

Not really, the four legs spread out nice and wide to spread the load.
