'First Irish case' of death by spontaneous combustion

West Galway coroner Dr Ciaran McLoughlin said it was the first time in 25 years of investigating deaths that he had recorded such a verdict.

Michael Faherty, 76, died at his home in Galway on 22 December 2010.

When I was in hospital, we had a lady spontaneously combust in the ward next door.

Lighting a fag in bed when connected to oxygen was probably not a good idea. We found out from the Nurse who had to put her out.

I learned an odd anecdote about my dad yesterday... he was in hospital for 6months aged 18 with TB, which would have been around 1957. The nurses used to bring him cigarettes in!

It fascinated me when I was a nipper, and a mate of mine developed a then convincing theory about trapped farts and compression ignition.

But what does the hive mind of CycleChat think?

There was a brilliant South Park episode where there was a panic about lots of cases of spontaneous human combustion in the locality. The school science teacher helped with the investigation and discovered all the victims had just started new relationships and surmised that the problem was due them being on best behaviour with their new partners and holding in farts. The solved it by a public health campaign encouraging everyone to let-rip. Unfortunately this caused accelerated global warming (or was it the ozone layer?) risking a worldwide calamity and everyone blaming the well-intentioned science teacher. The day was saved by a new campaign advising everyone to just do a normal level of farting

I thought he was a Geologist or similar, Randy Marsh and was the Dad of one of the Boys, Stan Marsh... I think.
It was also global warming as everything heated up and people caught fire and so on.
