An event usually held in late winter or early summer, held over a set distance and time on open roads, usually 50 miles in 4 hours or 100 miles in 8 hours, some of the riders are trying to see how much fitness they've gained over the winters training whilst the rest of us are just trying to get round inside the time limit without needing treatment for hypothermia or drowning.

1. Mythical idea that wind can give you a boost from behind. In reality, wind defies the laws of fluid dynamics and is ALWAYS in your face irrespective of which direction you are heading.
2. Lead rider in a group or Peloton has been 'on the beer & curry' the night before resulting in localised air pollution. Remedied by making them cycle at the rear.
