Because you don't want to take your hands of the bars and because to pilot it you need to be on strong medication!

Is it wise to give the person at the back access to brakes?

If you watch the first series of the Goodies, they had a two seater with a third seat welded on, over the back wheel. You also see that it rarely went more than a couple of yards before falling over - since Bill Oddie was sitting behind the rear hub, it affected the balance a fair bit!

Obviously, in later series, they had the cash for a proper triplet...

Slightly OT...

There is a superb book by Rory Spowers caled "Three men on a bike"

They took the 1930s frame that the Goodies made famous and cycled it the length of the African Continent!

Fine reading, especially the history of the bike.
