Blimey, they were there when I was at the university in the 80s

there must be more to it than what theyve stated, lots of bike shops manage to compete successfully with online competitors, and youd think with the demise of Wiggle as the main goto brand, things would be alittle easier on that front.

I read somewhere they seemed to have been comprised by Trek which was one of there main brands. They prioritised other shops because they sell more.
One of my LBS is a Trek dealer and they seem to have every model in every colour on their web site, there’s no way they have them all in stock. So it must some sort of agreement if they want one they get it pronto. Maybe that wasn’t happening at York.

It’s a real shame, I’ve ridden on a couple of their shop rides, great bunch of lads.

They've also recently done a biker fit for Mrs BB who finally took the plunge and bought herself a second hand road bike. She hasn't cycled much for years and previously stuck to a sit up and beg number, but they were exceptionally patient and changed a number of components that were less suitable for her than the previous (male) owner. The whole process wasn't cheap but nor did they shy away from suggesting more budget friendly alternatives where available. She was very happy with the outcome, but is now sad that they won't be around much longer.

Similar reasons given why one of our LBS closed down a few years ago; internet etc..
However, another one man LBS not far from me is still trading after at least thirty years and he'd bought the business from another manny, so it does make you wonder about the reasons stated.

A well established bike shop in Cardiff has recently announced its closure, and from what I have heard it is also influenced by changes in Trek's stance on.which stockists to support.

Shame - always is when an old and well respected LBS closes

I do wonder how long my local one can keep going
the owner also owns one near where my wife grew up and it is just in a little row of shops on an estate

AT least the one here has a lot of passing traffic

but the economics of running them must be a bit dodgy at the least
I suspect that when the owner gets too old then they might close - the economics might just not support the cost of taking them on in addition to running them

The manager has an incentive to stay there - his wife runs the hairdresser next door!!

Smaller lbs, but my local lbs Bristows Cycles has announced on their Facebook page they are likely to call it a day soon too.

Edit: I always remember the first time I used them, and when I went to collect the bike it wasn't there. Dave was taking it out for a test ride to check out the 50/34 compact I had fitted for a trip to the alps (The Marmotte) was shifting right. Whilst I done a lot of minor servicing myself when ever I popped by they were always friendly and never forgot me. Typical I was about to get them to service my headset, they'd done a good job in getting more out of the last one when the announcement came so I had to use a lbs thats further away. Ive used https://www.paradigmbicycles.uk/ quite a few times though, bought a sale bike from then and the mechanic at his former place fitted me to my good bike. So I've no qualms about using him and I hope he lasts at least 50 years too.
