Not being too savvy with gadgets i seek help or advice. My last ride i nearly flattened the phone battery,100% down to 5% on a 27 mile ride.So i have a Lumia 640lte phone running on Windows 8.Anyone got any ideas what app will not drain the battery.i have looked at Striver and an add on for £2-49 so i can send to Strava.Advice welcome.

I use an iphone 6 and Apple Watch, depending on which bike I ride MTB or RB I use mapmyride, strava and Cateye. At coffee stops I check my phone battery level and if required top up with a re chargeable battery pack similar to the one below.

What are you using the phone for ? Purely ride recording ( for Strava) or navigation . When I used my phone to record Strava it didn't use much battery . If using for navigation your probably going to have to upgrade phone or use a battery pack to charge as you go . If your navigating I'd go the whole hog and buy a GPS unit wahoo would be my recommendation

Sorry, but windows based phones are known for being really poor in regards to GPS performance, which is a shame as the OS itself is really nice.

My suggestion would be either a new phone or a proper GPS cycling computer - however be careful as some of them need to be linked to a phone - the Lezyne and Wahoo ones in particular.

The wahoo dosnt needed to be linked to the phoned while riding so has no effect on battery life on phone

A simple hack such as changing to Airplane mode makes a big difference. But as has already been said - there is a massive difference in battery life between using an app for recording and one for navigating. I use Strava for recording and you can pretty much ride all day and still have a battery at the end. Using RidewithGPS for navigating rinses the battery by 60 miles unless its in Airplane mode.

The problem is in part the Windows OS, putting it in flight mode won't remove the poor GPS battery performance.
