I was out for an hour in it this evening, I actually felt the front wheel being "steered" by the wind and every now and agai na gust would push me a foot or so one way or the other. A bit of an odd sensation at first but nothing really to worry about, getting low and pressing on helps.

Anyone got any stories about cycling when it's really windy? My bikes in for a service so I have to go and get it later and cycle it home which is only 7 miles but if it stays windy like it is then it's going to be a challenge!!!!!!

I would just wait til the wind has dropped...health and safety and all that

I went for a ride on Saturday and it was quite windy. It wasn't too bad, except there are certain spots where the trees are sparser and the wind blows straight through. I got buffetted about a little bit. Would being light make me more vulnerable to wind I wonder, since I amvery slight?

I would SERIOUSLY consider not cycling tomorrow if it;'s anything like this evening

I did only a fraction of your commute (Wadsley Bridge to Kelham Island-ish) - then up to Nether Edge but not only was it hard going, I did get suddenly blown across 1/2 a lane of traffic - it was positively dangerous

20 minutes onto what is normally a 25 minute (leisurely) commute of 4 miles, and using granny gears up mild hills. The psychopathic wheelie bin missed me though as it rushed out into the road on its side, flapping its lid, which was good

Hold on tight. Lean towards the wind and try to anticipate strong gusts.
Be aware that drivers are pretty mindless and the thought of you getting blown across the road probably wont even enter there mind. If the wind is too strong to hold on then walk a bit.

I managed on Friday night but did get caught by the odd gust.

To be honest even though it felt scary, the wind related wobbling whilst cycling wasn't the most alarming section of my cycle this week. The bit that really got me was waiting at traffic lights. Very nearly ended up lying flat on my side on the pavement :P

For the general wobbly-ness of this weather I just try to ride in a way that gives me a bit more leeway, discouraging close overtakes even more than normal and definitely not getting too close to the kerb in case it and I end up having unexpectedly close relations. Plus of course riding about half the speed of normal 'cause the wind is a bastard that way!

If I ever felt really unsafe, definitely get off and give it a shove. Or you know, lock it up somewhere and catch the bus ;) I cycle through most things but draw a line at threats to life.

about half an hour for 2 miles! got blown about a bit but luckily it is only a tiny back country lane that gets hardly any traffic
Cheers Ed

Lol, Saturday was a bit breezy (round here at least, 33mph with 53mph gusts) the headwinds and tailwinds were ok but the side winds near a place called Clopton nearly had me in the ditch a few times! http://connect.garmin.com/activity/445371478

I was out that same night, luckily my route had plenty of shelter. A38 was the worst part for me, as I was head on with the wind,on that section, 9mph avg speed on a pancake flat road! As long as I'm dressed for the weather I don't mind short rides, I'd even go as far as to say I like them!

We reversed our route so as to get to a cafe a wee bit later but it proved to be an inspired choice as we got a bit of cover until Clopton which is on an exposed ridge

It's getting really scary out there now!! I stayed off road whenever possible, but even so the bike acted like a sail and I got blown around in the gusts. Special thanks to the 11 plate BMW that skimmed past me on Lower Park Road - tw*t!

If youre in Manchester, are thinking of cycling home tonight and haven't set off yet. DON'T!!! Just get the bus/train/tram. The wind is almost like a hurricane.

I wish I’d seen this! I foolishly cycled home from Manchester that Wednesday, thinking at worst I could always push it home.

The fin on top of the Hilton Tower was making a horrible howling noise so I took the precaution to push it past. The Hilton Tower funnels the wind down at the best of time it’s a terribly deigned building. As I rounded the corner a gust caught the bike. I had hold of the handlebar and the seat, the bike flip 90degress and was a least a meter of the ground. It’s a steel bike and took all of my strength to hold it down for what felt like minutes. I just hung on being blown towards the stationary traffic. Fortunately the wind eased and I crabbed it past the building.

I’ve cycled in some windy conditions before but my bikes never been airborne!!
