Glancing is natural. Having a little look is natural. Staring is being an inconsiderate plonker intruding on someone's personal space, and is and has been considered obnoxious for a very long time indeed.

It can also be intimidating and even frightening, depending on the recipient's background and history - which you can't possibly know ahead of time, so don't bloody stare.

I'm talking about men who make unwanted advances, comments or stares to lone women in public, I have no idea why you think I've put you in this category.

Then why use the phrase, 'male gaze'? It seems to stem from the fact that they're men and not the fact that they're perverts, which would be more to the point as not all men behave that way.

I don't think you know the difference between an appreciative glance and a creepy, lecherous stare that makes the victim's skin crawl and is INTENDED to cause a reaction.
What the hell!! For your information.
You don't think women are objectified?
what the hell!! I'm not staring at women like I want have sex with them. I look at them and think "wow you have taking pride in your appearance" if I go clubbing I have had women grab hold of me and kiss me. It can work both ways in the "stare down competition"

If you don't understand the phrase, Google it. It's been around a while and has perfectly well-established meanings. GF didn't say anywhere that all men behave that way.

This is what it's all come down to and I'm black and I enjoy life, banter, and cycling. Come on everyone chill out.

Oh and women ( sexist)

How do you know if the woman you are staring at had preciously been sexually assaulted or harassed? You don't, as I've already explained, so pack it in.

If you read my post, you'll see that I talk about leering and lechery. That's completely differently to looking.

Look my friend, this is not a case of sexism it's a normal case of admiring beauty at it's finest.

No. It's unwarranted, rude and obnoxious leering in public. You are apparently unable to see how horrible your behaviour is. I don’t get where the presumption that being ‘gawped at’ or leered at is a ‘nice’ thing… at times, it can be creepy as hell. Try putting yourself in the woman's shoes.

"The male gaze[4] occurs when the camera puts the audience into the perspective of a heterosexual man. It may linger over the curves of a woman's body, for instance."

"From the male perspective, a man possesses the gaze because he is a man, whereas a woman has the gaze only when she assumes the male gazer role — when she objectifies others by gazing at them like a man."

It does sound like they're suggesting that it's characteristic of all men, which it isn't.

Blown well out of proportion . Typical PC bridge tactic. Get a grip, try and remain within the reality of the situation.

I agree entirely. Most of us have replied to the OPs post, but others have decided to take it way further and not reply to the OP at all. Then you get the people who then tell you you have not read the thread!!!!!
