As all the international data shows as the number of cyclist on the road increase the number of cycling fatalities falls. Interesting that the injury rate for children is increasing give that they often made to wear helmets...

It would be interesting to know further breakdown of the statistics... what age were the children... what sort of children where they freerange vs ones that had been transported everywhere. I'm sure that kids who are always ferried around are going to grow up with a delayed road sense.

But 4 were killed in one incident in January 2006, so it's hardly surprising there's a drop in 2007 as 4 killed in one day of a year really skew the figures when you're 'only' talking about 136 deaths.
By the way, that bloke who killed those 4 cyclists was on 3 bald tyres and driving on icy roads, yet he escaped with a derisory fine, a sobering thought when you compare with this thread http://www.cyclechat.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=16748

There is always going to be some natural variation anyway between years. These figures don't jump out at me as being surprisingly high/low. Certainly too early to detect any kind of trend and if there were, what is the explanation?

I believe that there were fewer pedestrians and motorists killed, too. For the first time in God knows how long, total road deaths were below 3000.

Of course there is going to be some natural varation between years, I was just pointing out that 4 cyclists being killed in a single incident is bount to skew the figures.
