One of the guys from my club organises a long weekend each year at Dolgoch youth hostel, which is in the middle of nowhere, in central Wales. It's at the northern end of the Llyn Briane reservoir and the nearest town of any size is Tregaron which is about 12 miles west, over a high pass.

I've been for the last couple of years. It's a great place if you like remote and basic. The hostel is an old farmhouse. No electricity, so it is gas lights and wood fires. Last year they put in solar panels so you can even get a tepid shower; previously it used to be only cold water. The price reflects the standard of accommodation rather than the views, the countryside and the peace!

We generally get there on the Friday night and ride on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings, doing a mixture of on and off-road. There are some technical bits but most of it is tracks rather than hard-core mountain biking (which I don't really do), although there are a few streams to cross which are usually quite fun. This year I'll be doing it on my tourer as my girlfriend has commandeered my mountain bike.

Lots of options: some people do easier rides that are wholly on road, but there are plenty of options - the Devil's Staircase is just round the corner. Some arrive later / leave earlier. Most drive but some come by train (and ride / push over the Devil's Staircase). There's a mixture of ages - early teens upwards.

This year we have booked out the whole hostel and we still have a few places spare. If anyone fancies coming, let me know.

There is a picture of Llyn Brianne on the CC Llandovery ride if anyone is interested.

That sounds like lots of fun Frank. We will be doing coast to coast off road that weekend, but definitely interested in similar stuff in the future. Enjoy it!
