It's over a decade since I was last in Nice, but it's just a hop along the coast from Monaco where lots of pro riders live and there are lots of glorious and fairly quiet roads outside the city / back from the main coastal drag to ride on as long as you're not averse to hills - we saw loads of riders on road bikes when we were last there.

Enjoy!

Is there Decathalon in Nice?

I would thing buying a bike down there is cheaper than flying one backwards and forwards.
My daughter has just informed us that she and her partner are buying a large apartment in Nice as a long term investment, that needs a lot of work. Dad has been asked to help with the painting and decorating and light renovations so I might be out there for a few weeks, a couple of times next year.

I have some reservations about whether they have bitten off more than they can chew, but they are both intelligent and it's their life

I'm toying with the idea of taking a bike out or buying a cheap one out there in case I get enough spare time to ride. Will do some research on use of eBay or Gumtree equivalent in France.
I love Nice. We have French friends who live 300 metres from the Promenade des Anglais. I can’t count our visits over the past 40 years but it’s always wonderful.

From a cycling perspective it’s the same as every other city, you need to get out of the city!! There is some great riding but not on the doorstep. I think I’ve only taken my bike on 4-5 occasions in 40 years and that’s mainly because I feel the opportunities to ride are limited by being in a city. I’d have the same view on visiting London or Leeds for example.

In your position I would definitely get a bike there permanently. If you’re there alone or to work the opportunity for a break will be important. I don’t think you’ll be able to just hop on the bike for a couple of hours though. It’s about £65 each way to fly a bike to Nice so buying one quickly pays for itself.

If you like to climb head out of the city to Eze via Le Grande Corniche. It’s the fastest route I can think of to get away from traffic - that’s based only on where we stay.
