hi guys , new member here so take it easy on me ,
I have got my first road bike , its the carrera virtuoso from halfords,
basically my first ride today and my foot came off the pedal whilst trying to power up a hill and the pedal butchered my leg .
was just wondering about shoes and clip pedals .
dont really want to spend a fortune , but dont want to cheap out and waste what little i have spent .
is there a shoe/pedal anyone recommends on a budget and the same to avoid?
cheers in advance

My first shoes i got from Sports Direct for £20,they will do the job till you find a better pair.I got a good year out of them before i upgraded but worth the money to test riding with cleats for the first time.Peddles are about the same price.

Shimano A530 pedals are double sided so can be used with regular shoes, about thirty quid. Clip in shoes are not everybody's thing. Remember if buying online that most cycle shoes need to be ordered one size bigger than your walking shoe. Be aware that you cannot walk comfortably with cleats protruding so consider getting some which have them recessed.

Wiggle have their entry level shoes cheap at the moment. Either the SPD style or SPD SL
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-m10-mountain-bike-cycling-shoe/ for SPD pedals http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-pd-m520-pedals/
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-r10-road-cycling-shoe/ for spd sl - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-pd-r540-spd-sl-sport-pedals

If not that confident the two sided SPDs (with clip on one side and platform on other as mentioned above ) are a good option. Plus easier to walk in the recessed SPDs

Cleats are the thing that you attached to the bottom of the shoe allowing you to clip into the pedal. There are several different systems/ versions of cleats of which SPD is one. Others are SPD SL (different from just SPD), Look, Time and a few more. You must get cleats and pedals that use the same system. Don't worry the cleats normally come with the pedals so you can't really go wrong, you just have to make sure the shoes are compatible with the choice of cleat type.

I use m530 pedals and the dhb mtb shoe from wiggle. the 530's i find are easier to use because you can clip in on both sides of the pedal so don't have to worry about it being the right way up. The DHB shoes seem to come up large, in that I wear a size 11 running shoe and the size 11 DHB shoe was very roomy compared to my trainers of the same size.

MTB shoes have recessed cleat so you can walk about in them quite easily if you are touring and on a cafe stop or something...
