There's probably a replacement. If wanting to buy online wiggle good as have free collect+ returns. Depending on shoe and foot you might want to order two sizes as they can come up small or narrow, like any shoes really

I use combination pedals (m424, double sided with a plastic cage.) They have been an excellent starter pedal for me and I can't see myself changing to anything else. Can set the tension really nice and low and it's a bigger platform so if you can't get clipped in you can keep pedalling. I use Louis Garneau Terra shoes (they are not like touring shoes but are SPD/mountain bike type) and can walk in them no bother.

Northwave City Jet and Northwave Escape mtb shoes also have this option.
I just this morning picked up a pair of north wave escape from Go Outdoors, £40.49 on a price match with JE James cycles. Seem well made and fit well. When I have tried them out I shall let you know. Beware thought a few pairs seemed to be missing the metal plates for fitting inside the shoe with cleats.

I guess that's an issue that comes with the the way Go Outdoors operate, good price for a pair of shoes though

Wore the shoes today for a 20 mile ride and apart from a slight numbness in my left foot (I have pins in my left ankle and it does play up often) the shoes were great. Just ordered a pair of Shimano M520 pedals to go with them. First clipless set up so i hope i got it right.

I too am worried about forgetting to unclip, but thought its time to try. The Northwave shoes seem very good, time will tell. Good luck in your hunt :-)

Hi all
I took the toe clips off my Carrera road bike before I had serious accident im fairly new to regular cycling
so don't want to try toe clips yet maybe when I get abetter bike than my basic tdf I tend to go out anything from 1-3 hours at a time on the bike, for last 3 months just wear my 20quid sports direct basic trainers id like to try some proper bike shoes can you wear them on platform pedals or do I need to look at certain types?
Im guessing most if not all of you wear the clip ons but if anybody out there has any shoes they would recommend I would be grateful
cheers

Unless you're going to get clip-ins of one sort or another, then I don't really see any point in "special shoes".
Although I now always wear SPD type pedals (Crank brothers egg beaters specifically) which of course do need special shoes, if I had traditional flat pedals, with or without toe clips, then I'd just wear whatever shoes I happened to have one - usually a good pair of brogues in my case

I think it's worth having shoes with slightly stiffer soles for longer distance riding, even without clips. For shorter rides, of course any old shoes will do on flat pedals.
I looked at some bike shoes few weeks back it was the stiff soles that caught my attention presumed if im doing 25 miles plus
they must make it better maybe not!
ordered some now so time will tell shimano MO64 s they were not ones recommended(thanks everyone who did offer advice) but I like just Velcro straps
as these have reviews were ok,if there no good will go back to the recommendations on here
ps I seem to be spending more money than envisaged when I bought bike!! I guess everyone s been there.

Thanks for reply when I decided to start cycling again plan was to go out 2-3 times a week for half hour or more I ve really enjoyed it apart from sore backside(new saddle on way on way hopefully will cure that) im now doing 20-30 miles 4 times a week and will go further want to give clip ins a go but if I don't get on with them I presumed a stiff sole bike shoe would be better for these longer distances
maybe I presumed wrong?

stiff soles will be better anyway - as it happens my standard leather Northampton brogues did have stiff soles so were fine (I wasn't joking about the brogues). In any case, you'll want the shoes presently if you've decided to give SPDs a go.

Whilst I don't know the specific model you mention, having done a quick google they look perfectly OK to me. I had one of the cheaper shimano models for years and they were fine.

When you do go for clips ins, I'd not bother with the flats-one-side/clips-the-other model as they'll inevitably be wrong way up. There are some really cheap shimano dual sided ones which are well regarded - just go for it. I'd be astonished if you don't get on with them after a day or two's practice.
You will fall off at some point, probably more than once - by taking the wrong foot off whilst stopping. But I've not had a clipless moment for a decade, so once you've got it it's easy.

I have some Specialized Sonoma which I bought to use on flats, they never worked well - slippy and I'd get cramp in my feet when standing...they are now used clipped in, rather better

I've looked at others, but the cleat hole cover is always slippy.

Just bite the bullet and go clipless  can get M520 pedals with cleats for around £16 or less. Nothing to do with the cost of the bike, just more efficient IMO especially with wet weather when flat pedals can be lethally slippy and destroyers of shins (and dangerous)!
update
bit the bullet and went clippless yesterday practised a lot beforehand fell off once when stationary
been out today all fine got the m520 pedals and shimano md64 shoes more mtb shoe but pleased with them

Hi went clipless Saturday managed to fall off once when stationary been out twice since been okay
I went for the shimano m064 I prefer Velcro straps mtb shoes pleased with them and m520 shimano pedals have got them at loosest fitting
What ive found is they recommend twisting your heel outwards to unclip with trial and error ive found its easier to have the pedal arm(should that be crank arm) at 12 oclock position and twist inwards its been a eureka moment for me maybe its my shoes and pedals or my cleat position I don't know don't care it works great for me
good luck
