The first thing I look at in (padded) shorts is the stitching. Especially around the padding.
If its a 'thick' thread, then they're not for me. As it can chafe on longer rides and cause saddle sores. A thin thread, or smooth, flat-stitch then maybe. But shorts with no thread (i.e. fabric welded) are best.

I have some DHB bib shorts from Wiggle, some HTC-Columbia Bib shorts and some bib tights from aldi.
For me the best of the lot is the DHB ones.

Thought you might be interested in an update. Bought my first pair of bib shorts. I went for a pair of continental shorts which were featured in one of the mags recently. Got them for about £35. I have to say they are extremely comfortable and I think they are far superior to the karrimor non bib shorts. I would highly recommend them.
