My first ever post and it's a bad one I'm afraid.

A cyclist has died in York after a colision with a Toyota pickup truck.

Full report here

Google Eastholme drive to the left.

I'm guessing what happened is the pickup truck pulled out of Eastholme drive which is a blind junction without looking properly and the cylist slammed into the side of him. The visability is pretty bad and it's definatly a stop and 1st gear junction.

It happened on a mini roundabout I cycle over almost daily and has really touched a nerve with me. It makes you realise the fragility of life. It's pretty scary for me how am I meant to avoid something like this? and I'm really annoyed it even happened when so simple to avoid.

My thourghts go out to his friends and family.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the cyclist or the Toyota prior to the accident to get in touch.
Phone TC Gemma Brett on 0845 60 60 247 or email TC Brett at gemma.brett@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk quoting incident number 12090210022.

Sorry it happened. Unfortunately I regared a lot of mini roundabouts in York as exceptionally dangerous due to the driving culture that seemed to exist towards them there e.g the Tang Hall Lane one that attracted such bad driving they redesigned it!

The problem I find is that most motorists don’t know that a mini roundabout is a roundabout, and the rules of giving way to vehicles coming from the right apply.

Agreed very sad but I don't think the attitude to mini roundabouts in unique. It's one bit of the road that I always expect my right of way to be ignored.

I'm going to mark the spot with flowers so hopefully drivers will take notice and slow down - I hope.

In London they mark the spot with a "ghost" bike. That would certainly make drivers take notice...

Sad news indeed.

Minirabs are horrible for cyclists. As MacB says, the priorities are all to pot on most, especially if its a rab on a major road/minor road intersection. Add that to tight turns and a big slippy lump of paint in the middle and they're a recipe for nastiness.

I have a mini RAB immediately outside of work, and every time I hold my breath as I go round it. Death trap.

So sorry to hear about this news. Please add an extra flower from me.

If its the Westgate one then . It's a swine to cross even on foot. All the usual problems of a minirab + a blind turn + nasty incline + pinch points on all exits. I saw a small CTC-logoed group make a complete hash of that one a couple of months ago. I was driving at the time and held up the traffic behind to let them get through the narrowing exit towards the station. I'm not sure there is a good way of dealing with that one, but eggs as eggs they'd found one way not to do it.

Yes, if you are on a bike, sometimes the rule of "Big" applies, I use one and am very careful as the approach is usually obscured by a parked van and some drivers straighline it, others dont indicate.

There's a mini not dissimilar to this at the top of my road back home and even in a car (and once in a transit van) people just don't give way to you. I find when cycling through the way it's safest to treat it like the T junction it used to be and no longer expect people to give me right of way.
