Poor girl was only 17, impact broke every bone in her body  Just heartbreaking. Driver has been bailed on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Terrible. RIP. I've been down that stretch of road in a car remaining well within the speed limit and even then it is scary enough due to the antics of many of the other speeding maniac motons.

The A38 is certainly a fast road and motorists do travel at excessive speeds along it. I've walked along the footpath of the section in question and it can be very unnerving.

The report is unclear whether Sapphire turned out of Common Road and was actually riding onto the A38 or was negotiating it on foot with her bike. Personally I would never contemplate doing the former, the traffic, even if it was travelling below the speed limit would be far too risky given that it's a dual carriageway.

* Not apportioning any blame on the cyclist or indeed casing judgement either way on the motorist, the news article is not particularly clear in its reporting. Very sad that anyone should be involved in such a tragic incident, whatever the circumstances might be.

Sapphire was in collision with a black Mercedes 500SE
it says. My fairly strong suspicion is that they have it the wrong way round.

Very nasty incident by all accounts

Difficult to say from the newspaper report tbh. It is possible that she turned on to the A38 and then looked to bear right and turn down a lane which leads to Selston (where the paper suggests she lived), which would involve moving into the outside lane and then crossed over the other carriageway (sorry no good with the maps). A dicey move as a pedestrian or a cyclist. All conjecture of course, the bottom line is she was hit at speed and if par for the course in terms of A38 user it may well have been excessive for the road conditions and/or regulations.

A member of the emergency team that attended the scene said that it appeared that she was cycling from The Common straight across the dual carriageway on the crossing. From the other side of the carriageway she could ride left along the cyclepath in the direction of Pinxton Lane (which would have led her home to Selston) or gone right to McArthur Glen.

The car that hit her had chunks of the picket fence imbedded across it post impact.

It's a terrible stretch of road in regard to motorists speeding despite it being a built up area with many sets of lights in short succession.

I hope her parents are successful in getting speed cameras installed on this section of road. Such a tragic waste of a life.

Very sad.

Is it like on streetview? Been near there on a bike and the crossing on streetview for bikes looks very shoddy, not proper toucans, very small ped refuges just chancing it on the lights. Looks fairly hair raising.

Yes same as streetview, crossing here http://maps.google.c...,168.11,,0,0.17

There are some awful cycle crossings on this stretch, so many sets of lights in a concentrated section of road. I haven't counted to be certain but in a 5 mile stretch of dual carriageway I think I go through around 18 sets of lights.

Getting confused, it was Coxmoor Road I was thinking of. That has no toucans. Still I thought some of the junctions I did were a bit mad.

reading this thread, the driver may have been doing nothing wrong I take it? what was the speed limit?

you don't have to be going that fast in a car to kill a stationary person
