Cyclist killed on my commute

There are some awful cycle crossings on this stretch, so many sets of lights in a concentrated section of road. I haven't counted to be certain but in a 5 mile stretch of dual carriageway I think I go through around 18 sets of lights.

The crossing doesn't seem familiar (it's been a couple of years). Is there a pub on these side roads or is Common Road the one with the hill through an industrial estate?

The crossing looks pretty straightforward, which suggests either driver or cyclist weren't proceeding through their prospective green light?

There may be a large number of traffic lights along that stretch of the A38, which suggests to me all the more reason for driver caution and and an appropriate for the conditions; as Tynan quite rightly points out though, it doesn't necessarily require excessive speed to kill, just inappropriate hazard perception.

A very sad situation. If the driver is to blame and excessive speed is involved (above the limit of 50 on that stretch - is that correct Abbie?) then hopefully they'll throw the book at him/her.

I've been told (by a member of public not emergency crew) that the driver was speeding and jumped the red light hitting Sapphire as she crossed the road. The speed limit is 70 along that stretch so keeping within that would have been enough.

reading this thread, the driver may have been doing nothing wrong I take it? what was the speed limit?

you don't have to be going that fast in a car to kill a stationary person

You have to be going NO FASTER than the speed it would take to STOP before killing a stationary person, REGARDLESS of the speed limit which is a limit and NOT a prescribed target speed.

That's awful. If this was indeed the case, I hope the barsteward gets a long long sentence, but sadly this won't happen as the courts are often totally useless in RTA cases such as these.

You do surprise me. In that case, given the number of traffic lights between the Kingsmill and the M1 there is definitely a case for a lower speed limit.

If the driver has jumped lights and Sapphire was crossing on a green light (logical sequence you'd think) then surely there must be a case of "death by dangerous driving" . Hopefully the police and the CPS will do their job and the highways will implement safety measures.

Indeed one can only hope, for if their past performance is anything to go by, then I wouldn't even suggest beginning to hold your breath.
