Shoplifter breaks free and flees after cyclist tackles him to ground
A thief who stole two pairs of socks and a jumper was tackled to the ground by a cyclist – but broke free after a struggle.
Police are investigating after a man was challenged for shoplifting at Edinburgh Woollen Mill in Crown Street, St Ives.
The thief made off across the market square with the clothes, with a female member of staff in pursuit, but was stopped by a man on a bike who grabbed the bag from him.
The cyclist took him to the ground but he managed to break free and run off.
The thief is described as white, with a tanned complexion, in his late 40s or early 50s, 5ft 10in, stocky and wearing a dark Puffa jacket and blue jeans.
The incident happened between 3.30pm and 3.42pm on Monday.
Pc Lorna Owen said: “I would like to speak to anyone who saw this incident happen and particularly the man on the bike who attempted to stop the thief.
“We have a good description of him and I would urge anyone who thinks they recognise it to contact police.”

Ok, the guy robbed a pair of socks but it a nice story about a local cyclist for a change! Anyone here?
On the Letters page the main letter is some woman moaning about selfish 2,3,4 a breast cyclists blocking the road and how she can't over take at junctions because of that. (she points out she is a cyclist, motorcyclist and driver btw)
