SOBA - Had a serious head injury myself 3 years ago, in ITU for 2 weeks, 6 weeks further in hospital and was back at work just over six months after the accident (no helmet).

Things can look pretty dire at first but fit people with a bit of luck and lots of good care can make amazing recoveries, it all depends on the type of head injury and the location of damage in the brain. There will probably be some long term issues however good the recovery might appear but that's only to be expected.

Chin up and keep positive.

Good to hear that you made a good recovery, vbc.

I didn't ask for details re brain scan etc, I might know more in a few days time. Don't want to pester my SIL - I know how a phone call in these circumstances can sent the heart rate soaring!

Still particularly relevant to me, this, as this happened to me on 30th January this year. I wasn't anywhere near a bike at the time, of course, so the wearing of a helmet in my particular instance is totally irrelevant. I can't believe some of the things I've been told I did in the aftermath of the incident of which I have absolutely no memory of at all and I still don't feel completely back to the old me yet but I reckon I'm 90% there now.

Had a bit of an update this morning. R has a collection of blood at the back of his brain, medics are waiting to see whether it resolves on its own or whether he will need surgery. No more news about his general condition though. SIL has requested that we don't phone (we're a big family and she could be forever answering the phone) and says she will let us know when there is anything to tell.

I have just heard from my SIL that my 19yo nephew is in HDU of the neuro unit having sustained serious head injuries on Sunday. She said he had 'fallen off his bike' and she was far too upset to be interrogated regarding at what speed he was travelling, whether anyone else was involved or whether he was wearing a helmet. Hopefully that means that this thread won't become a vehicle for pro- or anti- helmet ranting, but I'm not betting on it!

R is now 'stable' but still not out of the woods yet. He has periods of consciousness but it is too soon to tell whether he will be left with any lasting effects.

I'm desperately hoping, praying, touching wood, and doing all sorts of other things I don't believe in, in a vain effort to positively influence the outcome.

You must all be desperately worried,

Sometimes people seem to just take a rest after a bad bang then eventually come out of it OK. I dont know U or your nephew but am hoping for a good recovery. Best wishes.

Have had a further update today. The blood clot was not resolving so R had an operation to remove it and has been kept in an induced coma for the past couple of days. Medics now feel that he is well enough for them to start reducing the medication and allow him to wake up. It's still very early days but at least a step in the right direction.

Best wishes for R, SOAB! It does seem as if they've 'caught it in time' - it's the undiagnosed bleeding or clots that are deadly! Here's hoping - fingers crossed. Where is he being treated? We are lucky in our area - our local A&E hospital (Princess Royal, Haywards Heath) has attached to it one of the best neurological centres in the country (Hurstwood). I was actually CT scanned there when I had an 'off' about 5 years ago. So I'm in the right place if something happens to me...
